According to state police, Thomas Jeffrey Potter, 63, of 2213 Seventh Ave., first floor, obtained a fraudulent Social Security number in 1987. He is accused of using both his real and fraudulent Social Security numbers to obtain benefits.Between 2004 and 2010 and from January 2016 until now, Potter collected benefits under the name Thomas Potter that resulted in $8, scannable fake ids 380.70 in Supplemental Social Security overpayments because he claimed not to be working. He did report working under the identity of Jeffrey Potter.Had he claimed he was working under his true identity, his SS benefits would have been less.In November 2015, Potter began receiving Social Security checks of $168 a month for Jeffrey Potter.Police said he endorsed and cashed four of these checks totaling $744 between November and February.Police indicated that Potter in 1991 used his bogus identity and Social Security number to obtain a driver license.
