Housing Agency Hopes Id Cards Will Keep Drug Dealers From Project

In early January, the 340 adult leaseholders in Dickerson and any children over 12 will be issued cards similar to driver’s licenses bearing pictures, physical descriptions and addresses. The cards will be used by police officers to distinguish residents from people who have no legitimate business in the complex, Hawkins said. Fake ID Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp drew attention to drugs in public housing last spring when he began touring subsidized housing and talking about ridding it of drugs.

“They’ve had varying degrees of success,” Hawkins said.

The drug problem is not any worse in Dickerson, located off Jefferson Avenue in the East End, filltrustid Hawkins said. It was selected “because we wanted to pick one project and try it.”

Newport News police say the cards will make their job easier. “This will allow us to identify who is and is not a legitimate resident,” said Capt. Good Fake IDs Jim Harrison.
